3rd July 2016: Retailer Email Collection

Some retailers in Ireland seem to have recently begun an attempt to collect customer’s email addresses at the point of sale in their shops. This comes in the form of a request for your email address so they can send you an electronic copy of your receipt. If I were fond of betting I’d place a large sum on the retailers involved not being able to resist the temptation to add your email address to their marketing database. Which they’re not allowed do unless you explicitly give them permission to do so.

I’d like to get a (very) rough idea of how widespread this is. If you’d like to help then fill out this form, which has no interest whatsoever in harvesting your email address. Thanking you.
